Conquerors of the Useless

When I was kid, my dad used to contend that one could learn as much traveling the world as you could in college. It was a bug that has come back to bite me, time and time again. 180° SOUTH by Jeff Johnson promises to be exactly what the old man was talking about. So as I pass on the idea that the world is a place you should begin exploring asap, let me drop these two starter notions on you-- Books to master: Rick Berg's out of print classic, The Art and Adventure of Traveling Cheaply; idols worth emulating: Yvon Chouinard. Innocents abroad now!

So right, Trace. Jesus do I need to get out of the country now...because I love it so much...Sarah Palin and all.

I've had real adventures and meaningful activities in 45 of the United States. The cost of this domestic bliss is that I've missed out on having as much international travel as I feel I should have by now...at a grizzled 43.5 years of age.

But you know what? I know the U-fucking-S-A pretty goddamn well. Through touring and "consulting" I believe I have wired many aspects of the states.

Now, as you said: Innocents abroad.

Thanks.

when the ship sails , to conqueror the useless , i shall be there hidden in a corner, to be my own useless to get to my own useless .
i do believe too that what you discover in your travels are not found in classrooms , it is not thought by anyone . the silence of the airports or the deafening sounds of the ocean will talk to you .

i am just 28 today.
