They Don't Build Big-Box Stores Like They Used To

Cool documentary on the art inspired chain of Best retail stores designed by Site architectural firm in the '70s and early '80s

Great stuff. I remember BEST and several of those buildings. Back in the day, I had driven by the Sacto store but had no idea it opened and closed.

For a period piece, this is timeless.

Pretty cool. Too many lawyers and too little vision these days!Plus no one wears a mustache like the 70s.

Let us bring back the mustache!

I remember the one with the crumbling facade in Houston very well. It was right behind Almeda Mall. I used to go there with my mom regularly when I was a kid.

This is really incredible. That a chain would trust architects and give them such freedom.

We used to call the one in Houston the "tornado building." We made our folks drive 20 mins out of their way so we could see it. My brother and I thought it was the coolest thing we'd ever seen. I was in college before I learned it wasn't a tornado.
